JOHANNESBURG - Relief efforts are underway at the Dakota informal settlement in Isiphingo, KwaZulu-Natal, after fire broke out on Tuesday morning.
At least 100 homes were damaged in the early morning blaze, leaving more than 200 people homeless.
No fatalities or injuries have been reported so far.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the fire started from a brazier, which was likely used for warmth during the cold temperatures.
But provincial cooperative governance and traditional affairs spokesperson, Senzelwa Mzila, said that investigations into the cause were ongoing.
"Disaster management teams promptly responded to the incident and brought the fire under control this morning. Assessments of the damage are currently underway, with no fatalities or injuries reported so far. The provincial disaster management centre is collaborating with the eThekwini Metro and various social partners to ensure affected families receive the necessary relief."
