JOHANNESBURG - The cellphone found in the possession of alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala has been handed over to police.

The device was discovered during a surprise raid at the Kgosi Mampuru Prison on Sunday.

Following the discovery, Matlala was transferred to the C-max section of the prison in Tshwane.

Matlala is in the spotlight again after KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi linked him to Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

Matlala is currently behind bars facing charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering.

The Correctional Services Department is investigating how Matlala gained access to a cellphone while in custody.

Speaking during another raid at the prison on Tuesday night, Correctional Services Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale said the surprise searches will continue.

The discovery comes as Matlala prepares to return to court on Friday.
