JOHANNESBURG - At least three African National Congress (ANC) bigwigs are among those expected to be hauled before the party’s integrity commission for wrongdoing.
This includes Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, his predecessor, Bheki Cele, and embattled Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane.
Mchunu and Cele have recently been implicated in the rot within in the police ranks, while Nkabane has been widely criticised for mishandling the selection process for Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) boards.
The ANC said that the enormity of the claims made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi about polical interfernce in police operations required urgent action.
Mkhwanazi implicated Mchunu, tieing the minister to alleged underworld figures, including Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala.
It's also since emerged that Cele had links to the tenderpreneur, claims that both the ANC NEC members have denied.
ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri: "The commission has got a calendar of meetings anyway and I imagine they probably will prioritise this matter."
She said that Nkabane also would not escape accountability.
"She is appearing before the integrity commission. There’s no way she cannot be subjected to that given the weight of the issues that have been raised related to her representations to Parliament."
A date for their appearance before the integrity commission is yet to be confirmed.
The integrity commission is an advisory structure to the party’s highest decision-making body, dealing with any unethical or immoral conduct by party members.
