JOHANNESBURG – E-hailing operations at the OR Tambo International Airport have been brought to a halt as drivers down tools over the impounding of their vehicles.
Dozens of drivers protested on Thursday, raising frustrations over what they call an unfair and lengthy permit process.
The drivers said this could take up to five years to complete, and the delays resulted in their vehicles being impounded.
Under South African law, e-hailing drivers must have the correct operating permits as without them, their cars can be impounded or even deregistered.
Sibusiso Mtyali, one of the striking drivers, said Uber had ignored their pleas for support.
"Currently, we are going to make sure we do not operate up until Uber responds to our grievances and they give us something solid. So far, no response."
