JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) has shut down calls for the immediate arrests of senior government officials and top cops implicated in the rot within the police force.

The party’s calls for calm come after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made sweeping claims about infiltration, collusion and political interference in police operations.

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu was among those implicated in wrongdoing.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has since announced an inquiry to probe the claims of corruption and put Mchunu on special leave pending the outcomes of the inquiry.

Police deputy national commissioner for crime detection, Shadrack Sibiya, has now also been put on special leave amid growing calls for heads to roll.

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula briefed media on the matter on Tuesday.

"Calls for immediate arrests or prosecutions without process reflect a disregard for constitutionalism and due process and would ironically mirror the very abuses of power we seek to correct."
