JOHANNESBURG - Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection Shadrack Sibiya said he would not object after being placed on leave, citing it was in the interest of retaining the public’s confidence in the police.

On Tuesday afternoon, Sibiya was placed on leave pending the finalisation of a probe into his alleged role in the disbandment of the KwaZulu-Natal political killings task team.

This comes after he was implicated in a series of explosive allegations by KZN police commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, two weeks ago.

Mkhwanazi claimed to have uncovered a syndicate including politicians, law enforcement officials and businesspeople captured by a drug cartel in Gauteng.

Sibiya has welcomed the decision to place him on leave, as investigations continue.

"I want to say that I welcome the pronouncement by the president and that it is very much important that if we all say that we love this organisation, the South African Police Service, we love our country, it is important that people have confidence in us. If there are allegations made against any one of us, it’s important that those allegations be investigated."
