CAPE TOWN - A collective of civil society and religious organisations has given the South African Police Service (SAPS) a list of demands to tackle gang violence in the Western Cape.
The demands follow a spate of ongoing gang violence in various Cape Town communities that has left several people dead.
The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) met with the Western Cape Provincial Council of Churches (WCPCC) and the Cape Crime Crisis Coalition (CCCC) on Wednesday to discuss solutions.

MJC president, Sheikh Riad Fataar, said that the neutralisation of gang leadership structures, the deployment of a specialised gang unit, and tackling alleged corruption within the SAPS were some of the demands the collective has made.
"The MJC calls for the formation of multi-disciplinary task forces equipped to address transnational and complex syndicates through forensic, financial and gang related expertise."
Fataar said that the collective would also form an action committee within the next 60 days to develop a strategy to fight gang violence.
He said that the collective was set to meet with the Western Cape SAPS in ten days for a response to their demands.
