JOHANNESBURG - The R71 has been reopened to traffic after a massive explosion from an accident earlier prompted its closure.

The incident occurred when a truck driver carrying gas tanks crashed and caused a ripple explosion in the Magoebaskloof area.

According to the provincial transport department, the truck driver was en route to Tzaneen from Polokwane.

Spokesperson Matome Taueastsoala said the driver sustained minor injuries and was being treated at a clinic in Tzaneen.

"The Department of Transport and Community Safety appreciates the efforts of the emergency services and road maintenance teams who worked tirelessly to clear the area and restore traffic flow."
