JOHANNESBURG - The deputy national commissioner for crime detection, Shadrack Sibiya, will not report for duty on Wednesday morning.

Sibiya was asked to take a leave of absence following serious allegations made against him and Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu by KwaZulu-Natal top cop Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi alleges Sibiya colluded with an information peddler from the North West, Brown Mogotsi, and Mchunu to have the KZN political killings task team disbanded.

He alleges the team was working on uncovering a criminal syndicate in Gauteng being run by a drug cartel that captured police and members of the justice cluster.

Sibiya welcomed the decision by National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola to be placed on special leave.

He was requested to remain at home pending the finalisation of an investigation into him.

Sibiya said he will comply with the decision: “If there are allegations made against any one of us, it is important that those allegations be investigated.”

A crime and security expert, Professor Jacob Mofokeng, said the term leave of absence is not clearly defined.

“It’s not defined anywhere in any regulations or carries no procedural safeguard, and so it really puts a lot of grey areas into the whole matter.”

On Sunday, President Cyril Ramaphosa placed Mchunu on a leave of absence relating to Mkhwanazi’s allegations.
