JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng is planning to establish an elections team, specifically focusing on growing its support in suburbs and gated communities.
This is part of the party’s election strategy ahead of 2026’s local government elections.
With the polls expected to sit late 2026, the party is beginning to prepare for the elections ahead of time.
ANC provincial leaders held a media briefing in Johannesburg on Wednesday, focusing on election preparations.
Voting patterns from previous local government elections indicate a decline in ANC support in urban provinces.
It is on this basis that the ANC in Gauteng wants to pay more attention to suburban communities to improve its performance in the local government elections.
This will also include establishing ANC branches in gated communities.
ANC provincial co-convenor Hope Papo said a team focusing on urban areas will be established to get this done.
“We are also going to have a team, which will focus on suburbs and estates. It will be part of our organisation building sub-committee, focusing on what we call former white areas.”
In the last two local government elections, the party lost its majority in all Gauteng metros.
