JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni has assured the public of the province's capacity to deal with organised crime syndicates.

He has been responding to recent allegations against KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

In an explosive media briefing, Mkhwanazi claimed that drug cartels were operating in Gauteng with help from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the judiciary and businessmen.

Speaking on the sidelines of a policing operation in De Deur on Thursday morning, Mthombeni said they do not work in isolation but with the Hawks, organised crime units and national police.

“In terms of capacity, the SAPS has shown the capability to ensure that we do what we can do, for example, there is quite a number of cases where sometimes we are put on our toes in ensuring that we deliver."
