JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng's Department of Education said parents applying for grade 1 and grade 8 in the 2026 academic year will only have seven days to complete the process, or risk having their applications marked as incomplete.

Education MEC Matome Chiloane said the online application portal will open this Thursday, and will remain open until 29 August.

Addressing the media in Johannesburg on Sunday, Chiloane explained that parents will have just one week to register a profile and upload all required documents.

He added that the department only has space for only 400,000 learners in grades 1 and 8 and urged parents to be fully prepared when the portal goes live.

Chiloane also warned that once the application window closes at the end of August, there will be no opportunity to reapply.

“The five-step application process is very simple: step one you register your details, as a parent or guardian, you register your home address, and learner details and you apply to a maximum of five and minimum of three and you upload all the documents that are required on the system.”
