CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) said it welcomed the National Assembly's adoption of the portfolio committee on police's report relating to rampant gang violence in Nelson Mandela Bay.
In May, the DA presented a petition to the committee, demanding urgent intervention to stop the bloodshed in the northern areas of Nelson Mandela Bay.
The petition detailed the onslaught of gang violence in the region and called for the national government's intervention to curb the warfare.
The DA said that between 2019 and 2025, more than 1,000 gang-related killings were recorded, including 39 children in the last two financial years alone.
The party's Yusuf Cassim said that the adoption of the report was a step forward in holding the national government accountable for delivering safety and justice to one of the country's most deeply afflicted communities.
"The minister of police is now legally required to act on the outcomes of the report. This is a victory for every resident who stood up and spoke out, for every family living in fear, but we are not done. The DA will keep fighting for the people of the northern areas until this report actually delivers real change, safer streets and dignity to our communities."
