JOHANNESBURG - Only one of the Gupta brothers’ seized properties in Saxonwold was successfully auctioned off on Thursday.

The auction, aimed at recouping funds from the family’s seized estate, also saw some of the furniture go for modest amounts.
There are about 50 people gathered on the rooftop of the Gupta compound in Saxonwold this morning.

The gates of what was once a mysterious compound where the most powerful government officials were said to have been wined and dined were opened to the public as a business rescue practitioner seeks to recover millions from the Gupta brothers’ assets.

Three properties went under the hammer on Thursday - one a modest, almost rundown house used as staff quarters, and two other more luxurious houses with multiple bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms.

But it was only the three-bedroom house with a municipal value of R5.5 million that was successfully auctioned.
"Final time at R3.3 million," the auctioneer said.
The furniture that was used by the Guptas in the two luxurious properties was sold for R100,000 and R65,000, respectively.
