JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg has launched a forensic investigation into allegations of corruption in its Department of Transport.

There have been calls for a probe into tenders awarded during suspended Patriotic Alliance (PA) deputy leader Kenny Kunene's tenure as the MMC for Transport.

This is on the back of Kunene’s latest controversy, where he was found at the home of Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe, who has been arrested in connection with various high-profile murders.

Molefe is among those named by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as being involved in meddling with police investigations.

While Kunene maintains he has no relationship whatsoever with Molefe, opposition parties in Johannesburg remain concerned about his alleged proximity to the murder-accused man.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is among those who want a thorough probe to determine whether the City of Johannesburg was also infiltrated by dodgy individuals under Kunene’s leadership as transport MMC.

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero said he’s aware of the ongoing concerns and has chosen to look into the allegations.

“When it comes to corruption in the Department of Transport, we have noted the matter, and we have taken steps to ensure that investigations will be undertaken. It’s not only transport, but there were concerns around City Power and all other entities, and we are acting on those.

“A forensic investigation has been instituted. We hope the results will show the extent to which the graft and corruption has been happening. It’s important as a government that we act when there are corruption allegations of this nature.”

City Power, on the other hand, has been making headlines, with its CEO, Tshifularo Mashava, accused of nepotism.
