Mugabe sidesteps imprisonment, Matonhodze gets jail time

Bellarmine Mugabe has sidestepped a direct prison sentence when the Alexandra Magistrates Court sentenced him to a fine of R400,000 or 24 months in prison for pointing a toy gun.

And R200,000 or 18 months in prison for violation of the Immigration Act.

Mugabe will be escorted to the OR Tambo International Airport by an investigating officer, where he is set to travel back home at his own cost.

His cousin and co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze, will serve an effective three-year sentence after being sentenced to 12 months in prison, 12 months for defeating the ends of justice, three years in prison for possession of a firearm, and 12 months in prison for being in the country illegally.

This, after the pair pleaded guilty to all the charges

But Magistrate Renier Boshoff said they admitted to a crime where the victim did not cooperate with investigators and where conviction was unlikely.
