CAPE TOWN - Cape Town's City Hall clock can now be heard chiming in the CBD again after being defunct for 15 years.

The clock, which was installed in 1905, has been restored after about six months of delicate work.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis joined Mayco member for economic growth, James Vos, for the relaunch of the restored clock on Thursday.

The sound of Cape Town's City Hall clock striking 12 0' clock echoed through the CBD for the first time in 15 years on Thursday.

The mayor said the project to restore the bell strike and chime functions of the clock was to preserve the city's "architectural heritage".

"I'm standing here with goosebumps still just hearing that 12 o'clock chime for first time in many, many years. It's not just about fixing the clock and the beautiful chimes, it's about what it represents for Cape Town, that we take pride in what we have and we take pride in our city."

Hill-Lewis said that a new maintenance schedule for the clock would ensure it keeps chiming for generations to come.
