JOHANNESBURG - Internal rifts continue to plague the African National Congress (ANC) in the City of Ekurhuleni, with some members calling for the suspension of the party’s upcoming regional elective conference.
A group of branch members have sent a letter of demand to ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula, urging him to put the conference, which is set to take place this weekend, on hold.
The disgruntled members argue that the term of the task team assigned to organise the conference has expired.
The conference is expected to elect new leadership for the ANC's regional structure in Ekurhuleni.
In July 2023, the Gauteng High Court overturned the ANC's elective conference in Ekurhuleni, which had elected Mzwandile Masina as the regional leader.

The court nullified all decisions and outcomes of that conference, stating the ANC had violated its own constitution in organising the event.
Following the ruling, a regional task team (RTT) was appointed to lead temporarily, with a mandate to oversee preparations for a new conference within six months.
However, despite the ANC constitution requiring fresh elections within that timeframe, nearly two years have passed since the task team took office.
It is on this basis that frustrated ANC members argue the task team's mandate expired long ago, and that any decisions it now makes should be deemed invalid.
“The Provincial Executive Committee must formally disband the expired RTT, and issue an official directive to that effect. A new interim structure must be appointed, compliant with the ANC constitution, to facilitate the restart of valid branch processes and lawful conference preparation,” said one of the members, Katlego Mamabolo.
“An urgent audit of all post 10 June 2025 BGMs and resolutions must be conducted, and such meetings declared null and void,” he added.
In a letter of demand, the dissatisfied branch members are calling on the ANC's national leadership to halt the upcoming conference scheduled for this weekend.
