CAPE TOWN - Stellenbosch University has described second-year theology student Chris Scheffers as an energetic young man who would be dearly missed.
The 19-year-old from Riebeek West was found dead inside his room at the Dagbreek Residence over the weekend.
The university confirmed on Tuesday that Scheffers died of meningococcal meningitis.
The institution said meningitis was endemic to the Western Cape, where it circulated more commonly during the winter months, with most cases occurring without a clearly identifiable source of contact.
While Stellenbosch University mourns the death of the 19-year-old student, it's also working to trace those who were in close contact with him recently so that chemoprophylaxis - a preventative medication - can be administered within the next 24 hours to reduce the risk of infection.
Stellenbosch University's Martin Viljoen said as this strain of meningitis could spread in close-contact environments and is considered serious, the university's health protocols have been activated, guided by provincial and national health policies.
Viljoen said identified close contacts are encouraged to only attend lectures if asymptomatic, to wear masks during lectures, avoid gatherings and not take part in contact sport.
As a precautionary measure, all general meetings and gatherings at the Dagbreek Residence have been postponed until the weekend.
