CAPE TOWN - Child Protection advocacy group - Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA) said the rejection of an application to acquit a former Cape Town teacher accused of child sexual abuse is a victory for survivors of child sexual abuse.

Iain Wares is accused by a former pupil at Rondebosch Boys Preparatory School, known only as Stephen, of sexually abusing him in 1988 while he was a teacher there.

He's als facing multiple child sexual abuse charges in the United Kingdom during his 40-year teaching career.

Women and Men Against Child Abuse say the Wynberg Regional Court's decision will ensure that Iain Wares is held accountable for the lives he has shattered.

WMACA Advocacy Manager Luke Lamprecht says the decision is a powerful reminder that justice can still prevail when the law centres survivors.

He added that despite nearly 100 charges pending against Wares in the UK and widespread allegations in South Africa, Wares has evaded justice, using his wealth and legal influence to stall proceedings and remain free.

"We therefore eagerly await the outcome of this trial, and we are expecting a conviction in this case and as a result that justice will be served here."

Wares is also fighting his extradition to the UK and Scotland to face child sexual abuse allegations.
