JOHANNESBURG - RISE Mzansi has called on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to categorise the make of firearms used in crimes and those they confiscate.
The party also estimates that there are approximately two million illegal firearms circulating in the country.
The call comes just days after a gun control campaign was launched in the Nyanga policing sub-district over the weekend.
The executive director of Gun Free South Africa, Dr Stanley Maphosa, said the omission of these details blinds authorities to possible patterns of criminality.
”For example, if we see that the same brand of the 9mm pistol is turning up in gang shootings in Cape Town and Johannesburg, that will tell us where to look.”
