JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane said it will now turn its attention to communities across the city as it gears up to launch its campaign for next year’s local government elections.
With the municipal polls expected late next year, the party aims to secure an electoral majority in the municipality.
The party is currently in the opposition benches after it was removed from power through an African National Congress (ANC), Action SA and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) coalition.
The DA announced former mayor Cillier Brink as its mayoral candidate on Friday.
The DA mayoral candidate in Tshwane, Cillier Brink, said the party will now begin reaching out to communities across the metro to get a sense of some of their challenges.
"We are starting to speak to the people to listen what they have to say and that will inform our election pledges. It’s also important that we don’t break into this thinking we know it all. We’ve got to listen to the people of Tshwane," said Brink.
He believes the DA is the right party to govern the capital city.
"We will be crisscrossing the city and speaking in different languages. We will be learning what it is that stands in the way of the municipality improving the lives of people. That campaign starts now," he added.
Brink also said that the DA no longer wants to depend on coalitions to maintain power in the city.
