21 August 2025 | 11:16Businesses can now buy clean electricity directly from the power utility, but delivery concerns linger.
John Maytham (standing in for CapeTalk's Lester Kiewit) chats to DeVilliers Botha, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of Solareff and Deputy Chairperson of the Governing Committee of the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA).

Eskom has launched its first-ever Renewable Energy Offtake Programme, inviting large commercial and industrial users to purchase 291MW of green energy directly through long-term power purchase agreements.
The programme is part of Eskom's broader push to integrate more clean power into the national grid and accelerate the country’s transition away from coal-heavy generation.
The initiative targets customers seeking 'green points' or carbon credits for sustainability compliance - particularly important for businesses exporting to regions like Europe.

While on-site renewable installations remain cheaper and more efficient, many companies can't meet their total energy needs with rooftop solar alone, making Eskom’s programme a viable option for top-up green energy through the grid.
However, concerns remain around Eskom’s track record in project delivery and reliability.
Industry players say that while Eskom may benefit from existing grid infrastructure at retired coal stations, factors like environmental approvals and historical inefficiencies could slow the rollout.
Nonetheless, the programme signals Eskom’s growing participation in the developing wholesale energy market, aiming to give customers more flexibility in sourcing power.
"In future, you would likely be able to buy on the next day available market from any person you would like to buy from. The eventual purpose of, as we call it, the wholesale electricity market, would be that you as a homeowner would be able to choose whether you want to buy from x, y, or z at the best price... similar to what we do with our fibre suppliers - you can choose which works for you."
