JOHANNESBURG - Members of the public will soon have an opportunity to anonymously share intel that can potentially be used by the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry as it probes corruption and political interference within the police.

On Wednesday, the commission announced that it would begin its work on 1 September, investigating explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, in July.

President Cyril Ramaphosa established the inquiry in a bid to address Mkhwanazi's allegations and to regain the public's trust.

In a media briefing in July, retired Constitutional Court judge and commission chair, Mbuyiseli Madlanga, revealed that a hotline would be created for the public to share crucial information with the commission.

Commission spokesperson, Jeremy Michaels, said that checks and balances were still being put in place to ensure compliance with the Public Finance Management Act.

"That includes IT systems, it includes all the infrastructure the commission needs to do it’s work to operate. So those requirements, hotlines, websites, etcetera are in all in the works in the procurement system."
