JOHANNESBURG - The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) said it plans to intensify the strike at a steel maker, Macsteel, over what it has labelled as hostile retrenchments.
The strike will enter its fourth day on Monday, after workers downed tools on Friday.
NUMSA accuses the company of forcefully retrenching workers and issuing voluntary severance packages without consulting the union.
NUMSA spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said the section 189 process was a sham.
The union is now demanding immediate reinstatement of forcefully retrenched workers, fair and improved severance packages and transparent retrenchment criteria ahead of Monday’s meeting with Macsteel management.
"NUMSA calls on all workers to unite and join the strike and intensify the shutdown in solidarity with those who have been forcefully retrenched. Even if some among you are not affected today, tomorrow, it might be you. This strike is justifiable, and it is a noble cause. All Macsteel workers will benefit if they unite behind these demands."
