CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town has invited the public to comment on its plans to build a desalination plant in Paarden Eiland.

City Mayco Member for Water and Sanitation Zahid Badroodien said the city had completed its feasibility study for the plant and residents now have six days to share their views.

Badroodien said all residents and stakeholders were invited to comment on the study for the city’s first desalination plant.

"Our city is committed to securing our water future and that commitment means that by 2032, we must be producing 300 million litres of new water from new water sources."

Badroodien said the city's new water programme would ensure that about 11% of Cape Town's water supply will be sourced from the ocean.

"I want to encourage our residents to please participate in the public participation process. Your voice matters in these discussions. Your contribution matters. Please engage."

Badroodien also urged residents to read the city's proposal, which will be presented to council later in 2025.
