JOHANNESBURG - There are calls for the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Postbank to reconsider their decision to end their partnership.

The master service agreement between the two parties is set to expire at the end of next month.

Although the decision not to renew their contract has raised concerns about the payment of social grants, the government has reassured beneficiaries that there won’t be disturbances to the disbursement of social grants.

Trade union General Industries Workers Union of South Africa (GIWUSA) said it’s struggling to understand the logic behind the decision to end the contractual agreement.

\GIWUSA president Mametlwe Sebei said, "The original purpose of the SA Post Bank and its service agreement with SASSA was always to provide a reliable, affordable, and accessible public banking service to the poor. This decision spits on that mandate, especially when there is absolutely no evidence of the failure of SA Post Bank to deliver on the terms of the service agreement or anything that can be corrected anyway."
