WC High Court issues urgent interdict to implement measures to quell taxi industry violence

CAPE TOWN - Rival taxi associations, the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA and the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association (CODETA in Cape Town, have been summoned to appear before the Provincial Taxi Registrar to explain why they've failed to comply with the industry's code of conduct.
This follows the flare-up of taxi-related shootings in some parts of the city this week.
Five people were killed and nine were injured in attacks at taxi ranks in Philippi East, Khayelitsha and Macassar.
The Western Cape High Court has granted the provincial Mobility Department an urgent interdict to implement measures in response to the ongoing minibus taxi-related violence plaguing parts of the city.

The department has also published a notice proposing the temporary closure of certain routes affected by the ongoing taxi violence.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said the safety of commuters is not negotiable.
"We urge them to find each other, to find peaceful solutions to creating a vibrant mobility system of public transport across our region."
The court interdict will remain in force until 9 October 2025, when the court will decide whether to make it permanent.
