JOHANNESBURG - The Kwazulu-Natal Department of Education has condemned an attack at Glenover Secondary School, warning parents against taking matters into their own hands.
A minor dispute on the soccer field on Friday escalated into racial violence after hours when a parent and former learners stormed the school and assaulted pupils.
Five learners were stabbed in the incident.
The department said it is deeply concerned that adults inflamed the situation and has reminded communities that discipline begins at home.
It warned that further racially charged disruptions will compromise teaching and learning as grade 12s prepare for exams and other grades begin their assessments.
Four black learners and one Indian pupil were injured in the fracas.
Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka said the behaviour displayed by certain community members is criminal, and that the department will work with police and school authorities to maintain law and order.
