CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC, Anroux Marais, said that the seizure of illegal firearms in Mitchells Plain was a major step forward in the ongoing fight against gang-related violence.

Nineteen firearms, an assortment of 1,500 rounds of ammunition, three gun safes, 26 magazines and a stun grenade were among the items found concealed in cooler boxes and safes at a house in Lentegeur on Monday.

SAPS have beefed-up operations focusing on identified gang hotspots around the Cape.

The city has been marred by deadly gang and taxi-related violence over the past two weeks, with the death toll and number of injuries continuing to rise.

Marais said it was vital that this investigation led to arrests and prosecution.

"I congratulate the SAPS for their outstanding work in this instance. Every illegal firearm taken off our streets is one less tool of terror in the hands of gangsters," MEC Marais said.
