CAPE TOWN - Calls for the suspension of a senior Stellenbosch municipality official, accused of making racist remarks, are mounting.
A widely circulated video shows a man believed to be senior Human Resource Manager, Alexander Kannemeyer, making racially charged remarks targeting white employees.
In the video, the man openly admits to pushing illegal hiring practices to especially exclude white men.
In a statement, the Stellenbosch municipality said that it's investigating the matter.
Political parties and trade union Solidarity are calling on Stellenbosch Mayor Jeremy Fasser to suspend Kannemeyer, in the wake of discriminatory remarks he allegedly made in a video that was leaked.
Legal Representative at Solidarity Ettienne Pio said that decisive action must be taken against Kannemeyer.
"Having Mr Kannemeyer at the workplace given the two videos that were leaked, is simply untenable."
The GOOD party's Robin Hendrikse said Kannemeyer's remarks are deeply disturbing...
"Racial engineering, whether in favour of or against any group, cannot be tolerated in any sphere of government."
The FF Plus also added its voice, saying that it is shocked that a senior official would be willing to compromise service delivery to pursue transformation targets.
