Gauteng Health Dept rolls out HPV single-dose vaccination

JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is rolling out its Human papillomavirus HPV single-dose vaccination campaign in both public and private schools across the province on Monday.

The initiative is aimed at reducing the risk of cervical cancer in young girls.

According to the Cancer Association of South Africa, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the country.

Provincial health department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba assures parents that the vaccine is both safe and effective.

“This life-saving initiative highlights the importance of immunising girls before the age of 15, as early protection significantly reduces the risk of developing cancer of the cervix or the mouth of the womb later in life. The vaccine that is being administered is proven to be safe and highly effective against HPV types 16 and 18, which are responsible for over 70% of the cervical cancer.”
