CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town has deployed new neighbourhood safety officers in Khayelitsha to help fight crime in the area.
They're part of the 700 new officers who graduated earlier this week.
Khayelitsha is one of several communities in the metro grappling with an increase in violent crime.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said he hopes the deployment will boost crime prevention efforts in the area.
He added that this begins a rollout of the city’s largest investment in new boots on the ground in a decade.
"We know that crime is far too high in Khayelitsha and hopefully these officers, five per ward plus one sergeant, will make a positive impact on community policing, on visible law enforcement and dealing with all of the other by-law and traffic enforcement issues in Khayelitsha."
