JOHANNESBURG - Hundreds of unemployed young people are lining up in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, on Thursday to submit their CVs to the Gauteng government.
The desperate job seekers are looking to benefit from the Nasi Ispani mass recruitment programme.
Premier Panyaza Lesufi is relaunching the programme on Thursday, building on phase one, which is said to have employed many.
While 2,500 new beneficiaries of the Nasi Ispani programme will be introduced, many still line up outside the venue, hoping that they, too, will find employment.
Twenty-eight-year-old Nzuzo Radebe, who has been unemployed for three years, said he has applied for the programme several times but has never received any feedback.
“They often take our CVs but never get back to us. I’m not sure if things will be different this time around but it’s worth a try.”
Another unemployed Katlehong resident said she is aware the initiative could be a campaigning strategy, but insisted that she’s willing to take any opportunity to secure a job.
“The ANC [African National Congress] obviously wants votes for next year’s elections. That’s why Panyaza [Lesufi] is doing this. He started with the crime prevention wardens and now this again.”
The province has set aside R50 million for the Nasi Ispani programme.
