JOHANNESBURG - Athletics South Africa (ASA) has confirmed the withdrawal of sprinter Bayanda Walaza from the National Team for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, scheduled from 13–21 September.

Walaza, who was set to compete in the 100m heats on Saturday, injured his hamstring in the final Diamond League meet in Zurich last month.

In a statement, ASA said, “Following a comprehensive medical evaluation, ASA has determined that Walaza's hamstring injury, sustained during his race at the Diamond League Final in Zurich, Switzerland on Thursday, 25 August 2025, will prevent him from participating in the Championships.

"The decision has been communicated to the athlete, his coach, and his management. This decision was made in the best interest of the athlete and the integrity of the National Team.”

The Paris Olympic Games silver medalist and world under-20 champion will be replaced in the men’s 100 metres event by Retshidisitswe Mlenga.
