JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities is at the forefront of this year's national albinism awareness month campaign, urging the nation to protect the rights and lives of people with albinism.
Under the theme “Demanding our rights: protect our skin, preserve our lives,” the department is calling for an end to the discrimination, violence, and stigma faced by this community.
The department is using September to highlight that people with albinism, who have a rare genetic condition affecting melanin production, face not only health challenges but also severe societal dangers, including abductions and killings.
Spokesperson Cassius Selala said the campaign is aimed at raising public awareness, dispelling harmful myths, and promoting the inclusion of people with albinism in all areas of life, from education to employment.
He added that this national effort is a response to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) declaration on protecting persons with albinism.
“Promotion of inclusion in education, employment, healthcare and community life is important. The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities advocates for the protection of persons with albinism against discrimination, exploitation and violence. We also encourage South Africans to celebrate diversity by recognising the achievements, talents and contributions made by persons with albinism.”
