The Gauteng Health Department has defended its multi-million rand spend on security at the defunct Kempton Park Hospital, east of Johannesburg.
The hospital closed its doors almost three decades ago but earlier this year, Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko revealed that security to guard the non-functional building costs R5.3 million annually.
Provincial health department spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba, said the Gauteng Infrastructure Finance Agency was actively exploring options that will have a bearing on the future of the disused Kempton Park Hospital.
“Already, the expression of interest was advertised to test the market, and this will inform the decision on whether to refurbish the existing facility or to demolish and build a new facility. Both options will have huge financial implications, hence the need to explore a public-private partnership.”
While the spend is necessary, Modiba said the department plans to review the current security arrangements to minimise the costs while ensuring that the empty facility remains secured.
"We understand the concerns raised and acknowledge the need to expand access to healthcare to meet the growing demand across the province. A decision will be made in due course on the future of Kempton Park Hospital."
