JOHANNESBURG - As National Wills Week gets underway, South Africans are being encouraged to make sure they have a valid will in place.
The annual initiative is driven by the Law Society of South Africa and supported by the Justice and Constitutional Development Department.
According to stats from the Master of the High Court of South Africa, fewer than 15% of South Africans have wills in place when they die.
To help remedy this, various legal practices are offering free services to citizens this week, including having a will prepared.
A director at law firm Kloppers Inc., Ayanda Mboto, said one is never too young to have one in place.
“We would like to urge everyone over 20 to have a will so that they can leave a legacy for their children, spouse, parents or siblings. Without a signed will, your loved ones will be left destitute or to face an expensive court battle.”
