Traders and residents of Bo-Kaap will be prioritised when spots are allocated for the new Bo-Kaap market.

The entrepreneurial space will be located on the corner of Pentz Street and Yusuf Drive and will officially be opened on 30September.

And while it’s expected to boost the area’s economy, visitors will be to experience the rich cultural heritage of Bo-Kaap.

The city’s director of economic development and investment, Lance Greyling, said they would make sure Bo-Kaap traders were properly represented.

"It might be the case that, particularly because we want a really good mix of commodities, we want really nice commodities for sale there. So, we might have to broaden it to other traders. But we are certainly looking to give preference to those traders that are in fact residing in Bo-Kaap."

Vice chairperson for the Bo-Kaap Rate Payers Association, Ebrahim Christian, said that quite a few traders in the area were very interested in participating.

"It can become a community hub if the right foodstuffs and items are being sold and it can also, especially over the festive season, it can be used to bring some entertainment to the area."
