Senior researcher highlights obstacles to justice in the wake of judicial inquiries

The implementation of recommendations from the Madlanga Judicial Commission of Inquiry will be in the hands of the national government.
A senior researcher at the Africa Criminal Justice Reform, Jean Redpath, said this would be difficult to do because the same people accused of the crimes were the ones responsible for the prosecution.

Speaking on the Midday Report on Wednesday, Redpath said that in the past, many provincial commissions of inquiries like those into political killings in KwaZulu-Natal, did not see action being taken after recommendations were released.
"What we have also seen is something of a collapse of the criminal justice system, where things take excruciatingly long, so if there is a recommendation to act, it will take very long to do so quickly and it will be an achievement if it is done."
