The SPAR Proteas are gearing up for an electrifying encounter with the Silver Ferns in the upcoming 2025 Taimi Janison Trophy.
The series promises to deliver three thrilling international test matches featuring South Africa and New Zealand.
Fans may recall that the last clash between these two teams during the 2023 Netball World Cup ended in an exciting 48-all draw, heightening the anticipation for this series.
Coach Jenny van Dyk and her team arrived in Auckland on Sunday evening and wasted no time diving into preparation, engaging in several training sessions to set the stage for their competitive campaign.
Van Dyk has assembled a 15-player squad, ensuring that everyone is primed and ready to hit the court, aiming to make the nation proud, especially with the inclusion of new players in the lineup.
The situation surrounding the Silver Ferns has added an intriguing layer to the matchup.
Following the departure of their head coach Dame Noeline Taurua and her assistants Debbie Fuller and Briony Akle, the SPAR Proteas see this as an extra source ofmotivation.
Coach van Dyk emphasises the importance of focusing on their own strategy: “We will not allow the news from Silver Ferns to make us relax because this could go either way – the team might be stronger and want to prove that they can do it with their long-serving coach, or they can fall apart. Regardless of what they do, it is important for us to stick to our game plan and ensure that we execute it accordingly. We have assembled a team that we believe is good enough to compete. Ours is to make sure that we show up, are prepared, and do well.”
Historically, the SPAR Proteas are seeking only their second victory against the Silver Ferns, who dominate the rivalry with 36 wins in 38 encounters, including one draw and just a sole loss.
Given the competitive spirit between South Africa and New Zealand across various sports, clinching a win in Auckland would be a historic achievement for Coach Jenny van Dykand her squad.
On the personnel front, Shadine van der Merwe makes a welcome return to the Proteas for the first time since the 2023 Netball World Cup, stepping into the role of vice-captain. Nozipho Ntshangase also rejoins the team, while newcomers Entle Futshane and Juanita van Tonder will eye their first caps.
Entering this series as underdogs, Coach van Dyk acknowledges the pressure that comes with this label: “We are seen as underdogs, granted, but that does not mean that we should not aim for a win. We approach every game with the seriousness it deserves, and we always aim for a win. Now the most pressure is on the host because they are home and want to make their fans happy - but we also need to step up,” she added.
A noteworthy aspect of this squad is the presence of eight players currently playing overseas, which bodes well for the team's dynamics. Coaches van Dyk and Mdodana believe that the experience and knowledge these players bring will be invaluable.
Information and knowledge sharing among team members make the SPAR Proteas a formidable opponent and will undoubtedly present a delightful challenge during selection.
The stage is set for what promises to be an unforgettable series as the SPAR Proteas take on the Silver Ferns.
Fans are eagerly awaiting to support the team as they strive for victory on this grand international stage.
