Alleged gang boss Nafiz Modack has been handed a ten-year prison sentence for corruption.

Three years of the sentence are suspended for a period of five years, which means he will effectively serve seven years of direct imprisonment.

The Cape Town Regional Court has also ordered that he be declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Modack was convicted in June for his involvement in criminal activities with former senior police officer, Brigadier Kolindren Govender, who has since pleaded guilty and been sentenced.

Hawks spokesperson Siyabulela Vukubi says investigations showed Modack acted with a common purpose by paying a gratification amounting to R146,000 to Govender in return for special treatment.

"Govender prevented a cooperation between an officer from the SAPS Paarl vehicle identification section and the investigating officer in a matter based at Cape Town Central SAPS. As a result of Govender's actions, the Mercedes-Benz, which belonged to Modack, was never seized as it was the centre of investigation."

Govender received a five-year sentence, suspended for four and a half years after pleading guilty to being in a corrupt relationship with Modack.

Modack is also on trial for alleged tax evasion and another matter where he faces 122 charges for various crimes related to allegedly operating a criminal enterprise.
