Joburg Water: Damaged water pipes in Westbury, Claremont contributed to water outages

Joburg Water revealed that recently discovered damaged water pipes in some municipal flats in Westbury and Claremont have contributed to the month-long water outages.

It’s an additional problem the city said it will fix alongside other infrastructure problems to restore water to the broader community.

On Thursday, Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero and Joburg Water officials visited affected residents, promising to build a new pipeline to increase water supply.

Morero said for the municipal flats, they have installed water leak detection, and a repair team has been deployed to work on it.

“We will have to undertake work to repair those pipes and repair all the valves and pipes that supply water to the flats, and these valves are suspected to be faulty or have been tampered with.”

He said that they need communities to cooperate with Joburg Water.

“On the 18th [September], a team [was] deployed to repair a leaking meter that supplied a block of flats on the Davey Road. A team was unfortunately not allowed the work. We want to ask the community to help us.”
