KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said he has opened a case of defeating the ends of justice against those who tried to prevent the Political Killings Task Team from uncovering web of corruption in Gauteng.

Mkhwanazi was testifying on the second day of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria on Thursday.

He said KZN’s task team was requested by Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo to assist the Gauteng counterintelligence unit in an investigation into high-profile murders in the province.

But once they began working, they faced major obstacles and push-back.

Mkhwanazi is hellbent on stressing the point that Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu’s letter to disband the KZN political task team was a move to prevent them from uncovering rot in the Gauteng criminal justice system.

While the task team remains active in their work, he testified that he wouldn’t let the issue of the disbandment instruction go.

“The defeating the ends of justice case that I reported against the people who were involved in the stopping of this investigation.”

He was hesitant to reveal the names of the people he opened the case against.

“I could mention the people that I’m accusing for this, but maybe it would be better towards the end of my appearance before the commission that I could conclude and say, ‘therefore, these are the people’.”

Mkhwanazi will resume his testimony on Friday morning.
