On Thursday, the Democratic Alliance released a statement claiming that there are 12,000 samples which remain unprocessed, dating back to 2024.

The National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) has clarified that the Johannesburg laboratory does not have a backlog of over 10,000 biospy specimens.

On Thursday, the Democratic Alliance (DA) released a statement claiming that there are 12,000 samples that remain unprocessed, dating back to 2024.

The laboratory services said the current backlog in the Johannesburg lab sits at 1,540 specimens awaiting processing. 

Spokesperson Mzi Gcukumana said they are working on addressing the current delays. 

"There are 12,756 cases that have already been processed and are awaiting reporting by pathologists and registrars. The NHLS is actively managing the situation and has implemented measures to enhance service delivery and restore stability."
