TSHWANE - Suspended deputy national police commissioner for crime detection, Shadrack Sibiya, came under scrutiny at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where KwaZulu-Natal top cop Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi again accused him of gross misconduct.

Mkhwanazi wrapped up his evidence at the commission sitting in Pretoria on Friday.

The commission was established to probe allegations made by Mkhwanazi in July of police corruption and interference in the criminal justice system.

During his last day on the stand, Mkhwanazi zoned in on Sibiya’s history of alleged misconduct.

Sibiya was head of the Hawks in Gauteng when he was dismissed following a South African Police Service (SAPS) disciplinary hearing.

He was found guilty of misconduct over the unlawful arrest of several Zimbabwean nationals, who were deported and some allegedly killed by police in their home country.

Sibiya was later reinstated and promoted to deputy national police commissioner after a court ruled in his favour.

Mkhwanazi has questioned why Sibiya was given such a senior position despite his history.

“It’s a position that is very senior and critical. So, a person occupying that position must be beyond reproach. Their ethical standard must be above all of us. I’m not saying General Sibiya does not have that, but as we investigate, the picture that emerges makes me question whether the minister and national commissioner did the right thing by appointing him to the position.” said Mkhwanazi.

Sibiya will appear before the commission soon to present his side of the story.
