JOHANNESBURG - Mpumalanga police are taking a firm stand against drug trafficking following the discovery of a crystal meth lab worth an estimated R350 million in Volksrust.

The bust was made on Friday after crime intelligence tipped off police about suspicious activity on a local farm.

Five suspects were arrested as they tried to flee the scene.

Officers reportedly searched the property and found large quantities of chemicals, drug manufacturing equipment, and crystal meth stored in lunchboxes and buckets.

Police Spokesperson Fundiswa Maphanga said that officers also recovered a pallet gun and three live rounds of ammunition.

"This massive success demonstrates that cooperation between police in Mpumalanga and other entities, both government and private, is bearing expected results. Police are working hard to rid the streets of Mpumalanga of all types of drugs, and dismantling a clandestine drug lab, which is the source of these drugs, is a step in the right direction."

Maphanga said that the suspects face charges of contravening the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act, Immigration Act and possession of ammunition
