Police have made a breakthrough in an investigation related to illegal possession of firearms after confiscating six AK-47 rifles and eight nine-millimetre pistols with ammunition in Bellville.
Members of the operational coordination combat team swooped on a flat in Bellville to seize the firearms early Monday morning.
Police spokesperson Andre Traut said preliminary information shows the guns were transported to Cape Town from KwaZulu-Natal.
"The suspects were unable to produce valid firearm licences or permits for the weapons. As a result, eight adult male suspects were arrested for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. They are expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates Court once they have been formally charged."
