"It is the safest form of training at the moment and the most beneficial form... it is the best thing you can do to your body right now."
- Kelly Smith, fitness coach and Pilates enthusiast

Reformer Pilates is being praised as one of the most effective and versatile training methods currently available.

Smith explains that the reformer (a specialised Pilates machine) offers a full-body workout that improves flexibility, strengthens core muscles, enhances mobility, and reduces the risk of injury.

She adds that the adaptable resistance makes it suitable for all fitness levels, including those recovering from injury.

"The nice thing about it is that there's no way of you hurting yourself on the reformer."

Unlike traditional mat Pilates, Smith says, reformer Pilates engages stabilising muscles with controlled, resistance-based movements that build both strength and endurance.

She notes that the practice is not only gaining popularity among women, but is also attracting more men, who are surprised by its physical and mental challenge.

"Everyone thinks of Pilates as a very feminine thing, but nowadays it's completely changed because, honestly, the secret is out. For athletes generally, it's actually really amazing... it's not just about lifting heavy weights to get you to where you need to be. Everyone is now thinking of longevity."

Smith recommends two to three weekly sessions for best results, particularly when used alongside strength or endurance training.

"It's fun, it's addictive, it's challenging... in all ways possible."
