The Eastern Cape also recorded a significant share of the country’s crime at just over 10%.

Meanwhile, all other provinces reported figures below double digits, with the Northern Cape contributing the least at only 3%.

Cachalia said he is well aware of the scourge of crime in provincial hotspots.

“I have said publicly that we now have an integrated strategy, which is well-resourced, to fight the scourge of gang violence in the Western Cape, Gauteng, Eastern Cape and Kwazulu-Natal, where this problem is particularly concentrated. I am confident that this is the right strategy, the challenge is going to be with implementation,” he said.

He added that the decrease in crimes in the second quarter has given him hope that progress is being made.
